Bridging the Gap: EdChoice Makes Private Education Affordable in Tuscarawas County

February 20, 2024

For too long, parents in Tuscarawas County have been torn between two challenging choices when it comes to educating their kids—homeschooling and public schooling.

What’s a parent like you to do when the only affordable options have—to put it mildly—definite drawbacks?

With homeschooling, parents have the power to make choices about the curricula they use, but it also requires a lot of heavy lifting in the form of planning and preparation. Similarly, while children may be safe at home, they miss out on being part of a community of peers.

Public schooling offers children chances to make friends and learn how to deal with difficult kids. However, concerns about bullying, larger class sizes, safety, and quality of education give parents cause for pause when weighing educational options.

A Third Option: Private Education Now Affordable for All

In 2023, the state of Ohio threw open the door to a third option with the expansion of the Educational Choice Scholarship (EdChoice) Program, which provides funding for students to attend approved private schools that would otherwise prove cost-prohibitive.

Wondering if you read that wrong? We understand—so we’ll say it a little more succinctly: Private education is now affordable for all thanks to EdChoice!

Families with income at or less than 450% of the federal poverty level (i.e. $135,000 for a family of four) now qualify for EdChoice. Students with families who income exceeds that can qualify for scholarships on a sliding scale.

The window for applying for EdChoice scholarships for the 2024-2025 school year opened on February 1st, so you can apply today. If you’re not sure where to start, read all about the application process here.

Why Tuscarawas County Catholic Schools?

Now that private schools are affordable to Ohioans, parents in Tuscarawas County can enroll their children in Tuscarawas Central Catholic Schools, which offer academic excellence, safety, smaller class sizes, and the chance for students to be part of a thriving community of peers.

If the Catholic component of this equation is a sticking point, we get it. That’s why we want to emphasize that our schools are open to all.

Whether you’re registered with a Catholic parish, thinking of returning to active practice, or hailing from an altogether different faith tradition, our doors are wide open to you and your children.

When it comes to our approach to education, we aim to nurture the whole child. Our teachers make this possible by doing everything they can to ensure that the classroom is a safe space in which every student—including yours—is seen, known, and loved.

While other schools may emphasize academic excellence alone, our commitment to Jesus Christ means we emphasize moral and character development as much as intellectual growth. In the end, we hope to empower your children to reach their full potential!

We have a saying here: “Be a saint.” But what does that mean?

Helping your children reach their full potential means helping them grow in their faith and walk more closely with Jesus so they can live like saints in everyday life. This is the culmination of what we teach—and it’s a joy to watch as students learn to live vibrant lives of faith!

Did we mention we also offer after-school care for students ranging from Pre-K through 6th grade? We know how important it is for working parents like you to know your children are in good hands after school, so we are here to help.
